Central SRA

Special Rating Area in Central, Port Elizabeth

Andrew on the Central SRA

Andrew’s opinion on the proposed Central SRA:

Despite negative press from some quarters, the Richmond Hill SRA is a big success. As a property investor in Central I have a vested interest the taking back of Central through restoring law & order, closing down unlicensed/un-zoned businesses, building and park upgrades etc. I believe that the Central SRA could be the conduit through which this can be achieved when communicating with council, the police, MBDA etc.

Andrew is a proud Central property owner in Western Road.

Robert’s opinion on the proposed Central SRA:

Some people are of the opinion that the SRA will take over from the Municipality and other institutions and that these will not provide the services we pay for. This is far from the reality.

Firstly, the SRA is set up and controlled by property owners who have property, or who stay in, or who have businesses in Central and St Georges. The SRA is a collective voice to hold accountable and to work with the relevant authorities and departments to ensure we get the services we pay for. The SRA, once adopted, by the majority of property owners, will be a legal body with an elected management committee and board of directors. An annual general meeting will be held and the whole process will be transparent. Up till now the interim committee has just spearheaded the process and has laid some groundwork upon which can be built.

Once the SRA has been established, only then can the real process of negotiation begin with the SAPS, Metro Security, MBDA, the Municipality, area forums, ward councillors etc. This is an inclusive process and is not to the exclusion of anyone or any organisation. Once discussion have been held the committee will be able to ascertain where the gaps are and what is need to ensure a safe and secure area.

The SRA has a five year plan, at which point the property owners will revalue the concept and take appropriate action. The hard work will be in the first few years and once we are satisfied with the results, it should be a lot easier to maintain, and possibly cost increases will not be necessary.

There is no price to high, to have a safe and secure suburb, where we can feel free to walk about, where we can feel proud to stay and work. Central is the heartbeat of the City, if we do not take care of it, who will!

Lobola

Mbungculu’s opinion on the proposed Central SRA:

I think this is good initiative. It will take time to see the benefits but once implemented, I’m sure us property owners will reap the fruits by 2022. But also the property owners should play their role by tightening the rules when letting their property to tenants by not allowing squatting and getting rid of the riffraff asap before the good tenants decide to move & leave for Summerstrand, Humewood, etc.

I also want to take an opportunity to give credit to NMB for rejuvenating their buildings within Central e.g. Tramways, Little Theatre, Opera House etc. Now what I would like to see more is events, workshops, seminars, art, so the rest of P.E can know that Central is safe and alive again. Get the university students involved, young & experienced entrepreneurs investing in this city that has a lot of potential.

A good example that this is possible, would be Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

This needs to done with great urgency before Bay West City grows.

Khaled on the Central SRA

Khaled’s opinion on the proposed Central SRA:

Well done on this initiative. Please let me know the structure of the board and how this board is elected. Please let me know the nomination process.

Khaled is a proud Central Resident in Jutland Crescent:

Editor: The Central SRA interim Management committee was selected by attendees at the last public meeting at the offices of the MBDA. Once the SRA process is at the stage of implementation then the Directors will be appointed by the collective and they will be supported by the management team/committee.
